The City of Iisalmi has official town twinning agreements with Nyköping in Sweden, Guldborgsund in Denmark, Vôru in Estonia, Pècel in Hungary, Kirishi in Russia, and the Lüneburg district in Germany. A separate annual allocation is reserved for town twinning activities in the city’s budget. In practice, maintaining twin town relations helps to build international cooperation in schools, mediate culture and exercise, organise student and professional exchange and build networks in different lines of businesses. Iisalmi has engaged in town twinning for almost half a century.
